Hot Water Temperature Maintenance

Large commercial buildings need a way to provide hot water at the tap in the most energy efficient way, without long waits or wasting water. Pentair Thermal Management has a sophisticated domestic hot water temperature maintenance (HWAT) system that provides immediate hot water at the tap that is a nice alternative to a recirculation system.

Whereas, a recirculation system:
  • Requires that you keep the water heater temperature in the system at least five degrees above the maintain temperature to compensate for the heat that is lost in the recirculation loop.
  • Requires return lines, pumps, and balancing valves as part of the system.

Pentair Thermal Management hot water temperature maintenance (HWAT) system provides a simple, reliable alternative to recirculation in commercial buildings. The HWAT system:
  • Maintains the water at a uniform temperature along the entire length of the supply pipe. Thus, it is unnecessary to heat the water above the maintain temperature.
  • Includes HWAT heat trace cables that can be installed up to the fixture, which mean that you get hot water faster and waste less water.

HWAT is a fully integrated system that includes:

  • Electric heat trace cables – the HWAT-Y2 and HWAT-R2 heat trace cables adjust their power output along the entire length of the pipe to compensate for variations in water temperature and ambient temperature. These cables are designed for installation on hot water supply pipes underneath standard pipe insulation.
  • Connection kits and accessories – items for making electrical connections and properly completing the installation, such as power connection and end seal kits.
  • Advanced control systems – electronic controllers that monitor and/or control the desired temperature maintenance of the pipes.

The HWAT-ECO and ACCS-30 electronic temperature controllers optimize the energy efficiency of the HWAT system by controlling the pipe temperature with either HWAT heat trace cable. The temperature set point can be programmed on a 24/7 schedule to suit the specific job requirements, providing the maximum water temperature control and energy savings to the end user.

The Benefits Of Geothermal

Geothermal technology harnesses the Earth’s renewable thermal energy stored just below the surface or in large bodies of water for the purposes of providing forced air heating and cooling, hot and chilled water and dehumidification. The system exchanges the natural heating and cooling properties of the Earth between a building and the ground. This transfer of energy is the source of enhanced performance and environmental superiority as Geothermal systems employ a small amount of electrical energy to capture, move and concentrate a large amount of “free energy” provided by the Earth. The result is the utmost in space conditioning.

Ground source heat pumps are the most commonly applied geothermal system today for both residential and commercial applications. They take the natural heating and cooling properties of the Earth to create "free energy" for a given space. The beautiful thing for end users is that only a small amount of electrical energy is needed to capture, move and concentrate this energy.

Join The Future With Watts TRITON Pipe Fusion

The revolutionary TRITON system is the first application of radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic technology, a trusted method of welding used in industrial applications, for plastic piping.

This new welding technique has many advantages over conventional pipe joining processes:
  • TRITON enables pipe joining and pressure testing in minutes (instead of hours)
  • TRITON welds can be completed by one person, reducing required manpower
  • TRITON creates a safer work environment—no exposed heating elements, no adhesives with VOCs, no exposed flame
  • TRITON outside diameter welds offer unobstructed flow and decreased pressure drop, reducing overall system cost
  • TRITON is ready to use in minutes—no waiting for exposed heating elements to heat up
  • TRITON uses less energy than conventional pipe joining technology

The TRITON Pipe Fusion system includes three components: a Control Unit, Fusers, and Fittings. (Both Fusers and Fittings are sold separately). The TRITON components are designed to work together to create lasting hermetic welds in minutes without the use of adhesives, open flame, or heating elements.

The TRITON Series TRCU-M1 Control Unit is designed to operate on a standard 110/120 VAC circuit. The Control Unit converts the AC power to DC power, and then generates a radio frequency (RF) signal. The RF signal is transferred to the Series TRFWP1 Fuser to complete the welding process.

The self-contained and self-calibrating Control Unit comes with a 10’ long GFCI-protected power cord and a 20’ long coaxial Fuser cable. The power draw for each weld is less than 100 watts. (Only Watts supplied cords should be used with the TRITON Control Unit).

The TRITON Series TRFWP1 Fusers are designed to concentrate a radio frequency (RF) signal and direct it onto a TRITON Fitting. This in turn generates heat which fuses the Fitting and pipe together.

The TRITON TRFWP1 Fusers are currently available in five sizes (to standard ASTM D3035)

TRITON Fittings are uniquely engineered:
  • Unique design increases strength & rigidity
  • Lightweight form factor
  • Full range of sizes and configurations

Zone Valves Or Circulators?

By Bruce Marshall, of Emerson Swan.

In my hydronics classes I always like to ask the attendees which they prefer, zone valves or circulators.

A few years ago most of the guys were in the circulator camp with a few hands raised for zone valves. I would always ask a couple of the circulator guys their reasoning. The answer was always this. “If there was only one circulator and it failed, the whole building was without heat.”

This was a valid argument 40 years ago, when three-piece circulators were the norm. Water lubricated circulators came into being in 1963 when Taco invented the Perfecta, but they didn’t really catch on until about 10 years later. We in the heating industry are not early adopters; we would rather wait until someone else uses it for a while and let them get the bugs out.

Using Less Electricity

Today’s circulators are much more reliable than the old three-piece jobs, and failures are rare, so that 40-year-old argument no longer holds water. The main focus today is energy usage, especially electricity. Just take a look at all the regulations we have seen in recent years: the demise of the incandescent light bulb and the new electric water heater standards that will kick in next year are but two examples of government mandates to reduce the amount of electricity usage. Four circulators running, each pulling 80 watts equals 320 watts. One circulator and four zone valves could use as little as 86 watts. If a variable speed circulator is used instead of a fixed speed unit, the wattage could run in the low 20s.

In order to heat a space you have to “deliver” X amount of BTUs into it. In order to cool a space you have to “remove” X amount of BTUs from it. Long before you answer the question of zone valves versus circulators you have to know how many BTUs you need in each zone.

If you use zone valves then you have to ask what “size” circulator or zone valve do I need to let enough water circulate in order to “deliver” that many BTUs to the zone. Water will always take the path of least resistance, so the circulator must be sized to accommodate the zone with the most resistance plus be able to deliver the total gallons per minute for all the zones. The Universal Hydronics Equation is used to determine the GPM requirement of the system.

GPM = BTUh ÷ (Delta T x 500) or simply GPM = BTUh ÷ 10,000

Once the GPM has been determined, you next need to calculate the highest amount of resistance, and it’s not necessarily the longest zone. The formula for this is:

Total Linear Length ÷ .06 = ft of head

The .06 number accounts for 4 feet of head per 100 feet of pipe plus 50 percent to account for the fittings. This is used for pipe runs or baseboard loops. When sizing for a higher resistance component such as a hydro-air unit, you would need to know the feet of head of the unit plus the length of the supply and return pipes – the hydro-air unit could be closer to the boiler but have more resistance than the baseboard loop. If it’s easier for the water to go through the baseboard then that’s where it will go and not to the air handler. Toward Better Efficiency I mentioned earlier in this article that using a variable speed circulator is more energy efficient from an electrical standpoint, but it can also make the entire system more efficient as well. North American residential system design is pegged to the temperature differential between the supply and return (Delta-T). It’s part of the Universal Hydronics Equation, it’s how we size boilers, select pipe size and determines the amount of radiation to put into a room.

We also zone our systems and turn them on and off with a thermostat – all in an effort to deliver comfort. If we use a Delta-T based smart circulator like the Taco Bumble Bee or VT2218, the pump will react to how many zones are open, which zones are open, and even how cold it is outside, automatically and without an outdoor sensor.

These infinitely variable speed Delta-T circulators deliver only the BTUs required to match the actual heating load required by each zone. The entire system runs at peak efficiency, no matter the time of year, accurately providing optimum comfort and real electric and fuel dollar savings.

As for electricity savings, combining an ECM circulator such as the Taco Bumble Bee or VT2218 with Zone Sentry zone valves in place of traditional PSC circulators, your customers could expect to save as much as $20 a year for each pump replaced. This might not seem like a lot but when you look at a multiple zone system with pumps, the savings add up year after year.

How does reduced delta-T affect a system? Consider its impact on a modulating condensing boiler. If the system is designed for a delta -T of 20°F, but achieves only 12°F to15°F, the amount of run time the boiler spends below the point of flue-gas condensation will be affected.

If a reset control is telling a boiler supplying heat to radiators to fire to a high limit of 142°F on a 20°F day, a delta-P circulator programmed based on estimated system head loss may wind up sending 130°F water to the boiler. That is the condensing point, which makes the boiler work at, say, 86 percent annual fuel-utilization efficiency (AFUE).

A pump programmed to deliver a 20°F delta-T, on the other hand, will send 122°F water back to the boiler, creating more condensate and allowing the boiler to operate closer to its design.

So for all you circulator guys out there, maybe it’s time to take another look at “but that’s the way we’ve always done it.” We’ve moved on, and so has the equipment. And your customers deserve the highest efficiency and comfort that you can give them.

FlexPlate Flexible Heat Transfer Plates By Watts Radiant

Are you ready for a revolutionary new type of under floor heating plate? How about one made from a specially processed natural graphite, lighter and 50% more thermally conductive than extruded aluminum plates? Well, your day has come! FlexPlate™ has arrived to revolutionize radiant floor heating.

Graphite has been used for years in the electronics industry to dissipate heat away from key components in plasma TVs, cell phones, and computers. FlexPlate takes advantage of this technology to benefit radiant heating systems. Instead of dissipating heat, heat is transferred to your floors, thereby efficiently and evenly heating them from the moment the system starts up.

FlexPlate increases floor heat output by about 15% compared to extruded aluminum plates, or about 75% compared to bare PEX stapled up. This allows the opportunity to lower the required water temperatures by 5-10° F versus extruded aluminum plates and 30-45° F versus bare PEX stapled up. High efficiency, low temperature heat sources, such as condensing boilers, geothermal, or solar, can now be better utilized by the radiant heating system.

The manufacturing process for a graphite plate has a substantially lower carbon footprint and lower CO2 emissions as compared to aluminum. It is also much lighter to ship, lowering the amount of fossil fuels burned just getting it to the jobsite.

Homeowner Benefits

  1. Lower required fluid temperature means the ability to use more efficient heat sources.
  2. A more even, comfortable heat.
  3. No potential "ticking" noise associated with typical stamped aluminum plates.

Installer Benefits

  1. Light weight and flexible
  2. Trim-to-fit format
  3. Cut with a utility knife
  4. Fast, simple installation
  5. No sharp edges

Duravit Architec Dry Urinal - No Flush At All

Drinking water is one of our most valuable resources. Careful use of water and the development of sustainable product ideas to preserve our ecosystem are part of our responsibility at Duravit. This applies in particular to toilet flushes and also for urinal flushes. Frequently used urinals can be flushed up to 150 times a day, making up to 130,000 litres of water consumption a year.

The new generation of the Duravit Architec urinal range is an important contribution and a clever way of saving water. Thanks to a hose membrane fitted into the outlet, Architec Dry does not need flushing at all. The membrane only opens when urine passes through it. Then it closes again, keeping unpleasant sewerage smells at bay. The outlet on the Architec Dry has a stylish cover with a gel ring on the underside. This gel is based on purely organic substances which are gradually rinsed out when the urinals are used and wet the membrane. A special blend of pH neutral and cleansing ingredients fights any dirt and urine deposits from forming.

Pictured Above
1) Plastic Valve Cover, 2) Perfumed Ring With Cleansing Gel, 3) Liquid Run, 4) Opened Membrane, 5) Closed Membrane

The micro-organisms used break down organic materials and prevent the formation of unpleasant odours. At the same time, the ring contains ethereal oils which are continuously released and have a fresh fragrance to give a pleasant feel to the room. The green gel also acts as an indicator. Once it is used up, the module needs to be replaced. The dry urinal is also available without a cover.

Operating the Architec Dry needs no water feeds, fittings or flush water. This makes Architec Dry a cost-effective alternative to urinals with conventional flushes. The outlet with the membrane only needs to be changed after around 7500 flushes. By then, the new dry urinal will have saved a good 20,000 litres of drinking water. Maintenance is incredibly easy: use the key supplied to remove the hose membrane from its holder and fit the new module.

The ceramic bowl is easy to keep clean with a special hygiene detergent and a cloth. The Duravit Architec urinals were designed by Frank Huster. His designs are based on a square, ceramic wall object, from the centre of which the actual body of the urinal projects. This unique design language not only provides a contrast to traditional urinal designs, it also has practical benefits when it comes to fitting: The lip height of the urinal is 70 cm above the floor, as normal.

However, at a generous 38 x 66.5 cm, the back wall is a good deal larger than the conventional standard size. This means the Architec Dry can be positioned where previous models have left outlets, water feeds or drill holes in the wall. The ceramic plate conceals the old marks behind its hygienic white façade, making it a real all-rounder in renovation and modernisation projects. Whatever went before - Architec Dry will fit.

Another Opportunity For Contractors To Tap Into: Ductless Mini Splits

By Bruce Marshall, of Emerson Swan.

About a year ago I wrote an article about diversification for the oil heat dealer. Business owners continue to tell me of the different ways in which they have continued to grow their businesses. Without a doubt, the common denominator is air conditioning – one of the fastest growing market segments within the HVAC industry in the United States. And now with the increased popularity of the ductless mini- split, the opportunities for growth have increased significantly.

In the last seven years the U.S. mini-split market has seen a whopping 221 percent growth rate. And it is expected to continue to grow at a rate of 20 percent or more per year. There are many reasons for this phenomenal growth. Among them is the fact that since the introduction of the inverter-based compressor, mini-splits are more energy efficient and quieter than traditional air conditioning systems. And they are much easier to install.

They solve comfort issues where ducted solutions do not work, and there is increased awareness of the ductless option by both homeowners and contractors. For the contractor it is an incremental business with a small investment to support it.

Northeast Is Key Market
Here in the Northeast, we are ideally positioned to take advantage of this growing market. Most people think that the hottest (pun intended) market for ductless might be anywhere other than the often frigid New England states. However, contrary to what you might expect, the Northeast accounts for over 40 percent of the market, while the South owns about 22 percent of ductless sales.

Why? Think retrofit! Our housing stock is mostly old, which can be a challenge when it comes to running ductwork. The joy of ductless is that there is no ductwork, just a line set, and the largest hole that you will have to cut will be a 3-inch opening to the outside for the line set.

Ductless mini-split heat pump systems make a good retrofit add-on to houses with hydronic heat, radiant heat, or stoves using wood or pellets. They are also a good fit for room additions where extending existing ductwork is not feasible.

Apart from the convenience factor, there can be energy savings too, as traditional ducted systems usually have energy losses due to leaks in the system. In older systems, these losses can account for more than 30 percent of energy consumption, especially if the ducts are located in an unconditioned space such as an attic. Mini-splits have no ducts, therefore they do not have the losses associated with ducted central forced air systems.

Good Flexibility
Mini-split systems can be safer too, since there is only a small hole in the wall as opposed to window units or through the wall units, which can provide easy access for burglars. They are easier to install than traditional systems because the only penetration of the house is a 3 inch hole for the line sets to connect the outside unit to the inside unit. Mini-splits offer more interior design flexibility compared to other types of add-on systems. For instance, they can be hung on a wall, suspended from a ceiling, flush mounted into a drop ceiling or floor mounted.

Most indoor units look about the same and are approximately seven inches deep and have sleek, high-tech looking jackets. Many offer the option of remote control to turn the system off or on when it is positioned high on a wall.

There are numerous options in terms of equipment: single unit cool only; single unit heat pump; with or without inverter compressor; multi-head units. There are several manufacturers producing reliable and affordable systems, all of which are manufactured in Asia. In fact, it was the Japanese who developed the ductless market, which is already a huge market outside the United States. The last few years have seen the Chinese manufacturers offer a well made and competitively priced alternative to the established brands.

They Can Heat, Too
For the most part, ductless sales in the Northeast will be driven by cooling needs, but the capability to supplement existing heating systems should not be overlooked. While the passing years have seen a move away from electric heat, the fact that ductless systems are heavily supported by the utilities is evidence of their overall efficiencies. These efficiencies are the result of the inverter technology that allows the compressor to modulate its output based on load. While the traditional “window shaker” boasts a SEER of around 10, mini-splits start at 13 and go into the high 20s.

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, which equals the output in a typical season (btus/h) divided by the amount of electricity used during that same period (kW). Another acronym to be aware of is EER – Energy Efficiency Ratio. This represents the output versus the electrical input at any given time. And finally there is HSPF or Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, which is specific to air source heat pumps. Like SEER, it is a measurement of total btu output for the season versus the total electrical input.

Utility rebates are based on all three ratings – for cooling, read SEER and EER; for heating, read all three. It is important to remember that a particular mini-split must equal or exceed the stated utility requirements of all ratings to qualify!

Sizing
When it comes to sizing, a handy rule of thumb is to provide 20 btus of cooling for each square foot. This should be sufficient for a typical New England home, but always remember that rule of thumb is no substitute for true heat gain calculations.

Passive or net zero house designers are embracing mini-splits as their sole source for heating and cooling. This is a very feasible option when you take into account the significantly reduced loads of these buildings. Obviously, sizing for such a home would be radically different than for a typical, decades-old house.

Mini-splits offer an excellent alternative to window shakers; they are quieter and more efficient. Non inverter-based systems are less expensive than those with inverters and can be an affordable option for those on a budget.

For the contractor who is thinking of entering the ductless mini-split business, training will be an absolute necessity. Most manufacturers provide some sort of training, and manufacturers representatives such as ours at Emerson Swan, will provide comprehensive training to help the contractor develop the level of comfort necessary to create a profitable business as a part of what you already do or as a completely new, standalone enterprise.

Whatever the case, ductless mini-splits are here to stay and somebody has to install them. Why shouldn’t it be you? Learn more about our offering on our website: http://www.emersonswan.com/manufacturers-products/haier.html

The Air Quality in Your Home Affects Your Health

Today’s energy efficient homes trap stale air indoors, causing poor air quality and potential health problems for you and your family. What can you do? Rejuvenate your home with fresh, clean outdoor air…

You can significantly improve indoor air quality for you and your family with a Lifebreath® HRV; a Heat Recovery Ventilator that delivers clean, fresh outdoor air to every room in your home. The unique dual-stream airflow design keeps outgoing stale air separate from incoming fresh air and completely rejuvenates the air throughout your entire home up to eight times a day. Lifebreath’s balanced ventilation technology replaces indoor stale air with an identical amount of fresh air. This balanced ventilation is critical to prevent moisture build-up in your home during the heating season which can lead to expensive rot damage and hazardous mold.

Because of the unique ability of an HRV to transfer the temperature of indoor stale air to the incoming fresh air, you’ll realize lower heating and cooling costs year round while enjoying all the benefits superior indoor air quality delivers. In fact, the efficiency of the Lifebreath® HRV is so great that virtually none of the warmth collected from your home in winter is lost to the outside. In summer, the HRV works in reverse by removing heat from the incoming air and transferring it to the outgoing air, keeping your home cool and fresh.

Lifebreath® HRV Features
  • Easy To Install: Professional contractors can easily integrate a Lifebreath® HRV into a new home or retrofit the HRV into an existing system.
  • Easy To Maintain: Twice yearly, remove the core and filters from the unit and rinse clean. Vacuum any dust from the unit and check weather hoods for leaves and other debris.

Crawl Space Vapor Barrier - Viper CS By Insulation Solutions

Traditional dirt crawl spaces are full of moisture that enters via evaporation and diffusion through the floor and sidewalls. An important part of a crawl space moisture control strategy is the installation of a vapor barrier. A vapor barrier provides the crawl space with a moisture and soil gas protection layer that decreases the amount of moisture and radon present in the crawl space. This greatly reduces the risk for:

  • Mold
  • Decreased Insulation R-Values
  • Dust Mites
  • Mildew
  • Increased Heating & Cooling Bills
  • Aggravated Allergies
  • Wood Rot
  • Odors
  • Poor Storage Environment
  • Floor Failure
  • Insects
  • Poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)

Viper CS is a "Class A" vapor barrier with excellent physical characteristics, including high puncture resistance, high tensile strength and low water vapor permeance. It will prevent ground moisture from entering the crawl space when installed on the walls and floor, greatly reducing the negative effects of a moisture laden crawl space.

When using Viper CS in a crawl space application, you will be providing the home or building with the best protection on the market! Viper CS offers several advantages over other crawl space vapor barriers:

Superior Puncture & Tear Resistance

  • Reduces chances of product damage during installation
  • Maintains integrity over time under foot traffic and storage
Super Low Water Vapor Permeability
  • Qualifies as a true vapor barrier (perm rating less than .01)
  • Ensures an effective seal against pressure driven moisture
Extrusion Coated Bright White Finish
  • Provides a bright, clean look for the crawl space
  • Smooth coating allows for easy removal of dirt, footprints and smudges
